Center Director R. Daniel Kelemen wins European Union Studies Book award
Center for European Studies Director and Jean Monnet Chair, Professor R. Daniel Kelemen has been awarded the European Union Studies Association Best Book Prize for the best book on the EU published in 2011 or 2012, for his book Eurolegalism: The Transformation of Law and Regulation in the European Union (Harvard University Press, 2011). The European Union Studies Association (EUSA) is the premier scholarly and professional association focusing on the European Union, with 1000 members throughout North America, all EU member states, and on all continents, representing the social sciences, the humanities, business and law practitioners, news media, and governments. The prize will be presented at the Biennial EUSA Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, May 9-11, 2013.
Jean Monnet Chair
R. Daniel Kelemen, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for European Studies has been named Jean Monnet Chair in EU Politics by the European Commission in Brussels. Named after one of the founders of the European Union, the Jean Monnet Chair program supports teaching positions in the field of European integration studies worldwide.
Professor Kelemen was one of only four recipients of a prestigious Jean Monnet chair in the United States this year. Along with the title of “Jean Monnet Chair,” Professor Kelemen has received a three-year grant of $60,000 to support a guest lecture series and a number of conferences focusing on European integration at Rutgers’ Center for European Studies.
Professor Kelemen has published extensively in the field of European Union politics. His latest book, Eurolegalism: The Transformation of Law and Regulation in the European Union, was published in spring 2011 with Harvard University Press. Prior to coming to Rutgers, Kelemen was Fellow in Politics at Lincoln College, University of Oxford. He has been a Member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, a Fulbright Fellow in EU Studies at the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels and a visiting Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. He was educated at Berkeley (A.B. in Sociology, summa cum laude) and Stanford (M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science).

The Lessons from Europe workshop is the culmination of a two-year series of events hosted by Rutgers Center for European Studies exploring what US citizens and policy-makers can learn from the experiences of European democracies in confronting our common 21st century policy challenges. The workshop will bring together a distinguished group of scholars to explore what lessons the US can draw from European experiences in policy areas including climate change, education, gender and employment, health care, immigration, pensions and transportation.
