Film & Discussion, Taikon: A Roma in Sweden

Please join the Center for European Studies for this documentary on influential writer and leading Romani activist Katarina Taikon, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Lawen Mohtadi, and our own Ethel Brooks (Department of Sociology and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies). 

Lawen Mohtadi is a documentary filmmaker, and, along with Gellert Tamas, the co-writer and co-director of the 2015 documentary Taikon – the Untold Story of a Roma Freedom Fighter. She is also an author, journalist, and publisher, who has worked for major newspapers such as Dagens Nyhet, Göteborgs Posten and Expressen, as well as at the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation. Ms. Mohtadi was a chief editor for Bang magazine 2008 -2011, and is currently senior editor at Natur&Kultur.

Ethel Brooks is associate professor at Rutgers in the departments of Sociology and of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, where she is both chair and graduate program director. Author of the award-winning Unraveling the Garment Industry: Transnational Organizing and Women’s Work (2007), among many other works, she is currently completing Encampments, Palmograms, Patrins: Romani Histories and Avant-Garde Futures. Appointed as US-UK Fulbright Distinguished Chair, University of the Arts London, Prof. Brooks has also been since 2015 chair of the European Roma Rights Centre.
